Using laser light to communicate between Earth and spacecraft offers many advantages, not least of all a step-change increase in bandwidth. In order to make free-space optical communications a conventional channel for data transfer, we have to overcome a number of technical challenges.
We are a member of the Australian Optical Communications Ground Station Network, a collaboration of New Zealand and Australian institutions working towards establishing a network of optical communication ground stations in the Southern Hemisphere.
